About this camp

The Data Detectives Big Data Summer Academy is a two-week immersive day program at Emory University for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. Students delve into real-world community health problems, specifically focusing on cancer data, through problem-based learning. The curriculum integrates lectures from Emory Winship faculty on topics such as cell biology, statistics, epidemiology, and cancer disparities. Participants gain hands-on experience with Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning, supported by undergraduate and graduate student STEM mentors. The program includes tours of core facilities within the Winship Cancer Institute, exposing students to cutting-edge cancer research. A key outcome is the development of a Community Action Plan by student teams to address a real-world cancer-related community health problem, culminating in presentations to families, staff, faculty, and mentors on the final day. Students also learn about educational and career paths in STEM, data sciences, and biomedical research.
