The Georgia Tech R.E.A.L. Program and GTRI High School Summer Internships offer high school students aged 16 and over a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on research within Georgia Tech labs. Interns are mentored by Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) faculty and staff, gaining real-world experience in various STEM fields. The program aims to bridge the gap in Georgia's STEM workforce by raising awareness of STEM career opportunities. Students work on projects that can range from piezoelectric systems and rapid prototyping to robotics, drones, and the physics of radar emissions. Past projects have included building educational kiosks for night vision information and developing piezoelectric tiles for energy generation. Participants attend a workplace orientation, tour Georgia Tech labs, and receive training in STEM skills like soldering and assembly tools. The experience culminates in a final presentation where interns showcase their work. The R.E.A.L. program specifically targets students from underrepresented populations in STEM education, allowing them to conduct research with their high school teachers who are part of the Georgia Immersive Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT) program.
Interns work up to 24 hours a week, Monday-Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., engaging in hands-on research projects and collaborating with GTRI mentors.
